Hey there y'all!
It's "spring"-ish here in Houston ;)
For the uninitiated, that means us poor souls down here may or may not get the pleasurable Texas experience of having all four seasons of weather in one week. But what is also means is that-- for Southerners at least-- fresh produce from the "cold" months is starting to produce.
Buying food while it's in season is a particularly great way to eat vegan on a budget.
When you're trying to purchase citrus in the middle of August, this is one of the reasons that might explain why the pocket book cringes a bit. Apples are also pretty expensive when purchased outside the standard "fall" season.
It took my husband and I a while to get used to the fact that we can't just expect to have any fruit or vegetable we want, regardless of the time of year. It isn't really just about price, either.
Fruits and vegetables taste better when they're eaten according to season.
We never got the chance to learn about seasonal vegetables growing up, so this was a bit of learning curve for me. I consulted the internet in my early days, and have now gotten accustomed to the cycle of my region.
For more information on the seasonal produce in your area, I recommend this Seasonal Food Guide. You simply enter your state/month of interest and the service populates a produce list!
